Empty branch causes an error during import

Description
The plugin got changed to use an empty string as default for the branch which lets the import fail.
empty string is not a valid pathspec. please use . instead if you meant to match all paths
Using the . or develop as branch works fine, . looks weird, so I would prefer develop but this is specific to the repository.
So perhaps some code to use . if empty string is set?
