2) yes, I have classes under /etc/puppet/environments.

I have installed 3.8.2 puppet package.
Without directory environment, the curl is returning "[production]" in the... ganesan gurumurthy

You where spot on. Puppet master has both package and gem. Gem is 3.7.5 ... ganesan gurumurthy
